Dodson & Flinker welcomes Dan Shaw as an associate landscape designer. Prior to joining us, Dan worked as a designer in the Pacific Northwest on projects that integrated public space and ecological restoration. Dan holds a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington and a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts.
Plains Elementary School is set to welcome students to a new building for the fall 2015 semester. D&F designed the surrounding landscape and “nature play” area on a team led by Jones Whitsett Architects.
Working with a design team led by T2 architects, D&F has been working with the Town of New Bedford to explore options for a replacement to John Hannigan Elementary School.
In 2015, D&F has had the opportunity to work with a number of local governments and non-profits to improve the resilience and accessibility of southeastern Massachusetts’ coastal landscape.
In July 2015, D&F helped lead a week-long design charrette in New Bedford, MA, with Brovitz Community Planning and Design and the Principle Group.
Over a period of three days in March, several hundred Farmington residents participated in a charrette led by Dodson & Flinker and Mullin Associates.
On Thursday, Dodson & Flinker, Inc. was pleased to accept an Honor Award from the Western Massachusetts chapter of The American Institute of Architects for the Minuteman Crossing plaza at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Deb Tacy recently joined D&F as office manager. A 35-year native of Ashfield, MA, Deb returned to school at age 38 to pursue a degree in accounting and certification in tax preparation. Deb is also a 2005 graduate of New York Institute of Photography, and her work has been published in Smithsonian magazine. She has been a “working professional on the side” for many years.
Site clearing began last week for Plains Elementary School, a new public school in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Dodson & Flinker collaborated with Jones Whitsett Architects on the school design.
A project by Associate Nathan Burgess has won the “Visionary Project” award from the Suburbia Transformed 3.0 Design Competition.
The Thousand Island region is hoping to become designated as a New York State Scenic Area of Statewide Significance (SASS). Dodson & Flinker, Inc., is helping the process by working with local stakeholders to formally evaluate the scenic resources and character of the area.
Harry Dodson just returned from a conference in Shaoxing, China, where he gave a presentation and worked with a group of Chinese and American professionals and academics to help generate ideas about urban river restoration in the city.
At the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) 2014 conference, Associate Nate Burgess was recognized along with three collaborators for their 2013 paper “New Beach Designs as Urban Adaptation to Sea Level Rise.”
The Downtown Turners Falls Livability Plan received a Planning Award from the APA-Massachusetts Chapter, which recognizes projects for their innovation, quality, transferability, implementation, and comprehensiveness. The Plan provides a basis for decision-making and offers a concise action plan to achieve community goals for future sustainable development.
The town of Montague, village of Turners Falls, has issued an RFP for the “Avenue A Streetscape Enhancement Project,” one of the site-specific recommendations included in the Livability Plan prepared by Dodson & Flinker in June 2013.
Dodson & Flinker welcomes Nate Burgess as our newest Associate. Nate graduated this spring from the University of Virginia with a Master’s degree in landscape architecture. Prior to moving to the Pioneer Valley, he worked in Washington DC as a trainee with the National Park Service’s Historic American Landscape Survey, documenting the historic Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee, WI.
The firm is happy to welcome Jennifer Masters as a new associate. Jennifer recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Masters in landscape architecture, where her research was focused on the intersection of theory and practice relative to the social aspects of urban open space design.
The final report, Downtown Turners Falls Livability Plan, available in its entirety on the Town of Montague website, has been submitted. Dodson & Flinker worked hand in hand with residents and village planners of Turners Falls to prepare a final report consisting of a comprehensive analysis, vision plan, design recommendations, and revitalization strategies.
In 2007, the last pre-revolutionary farm in the inner Boston suburbs was about to be turned into a 300-unit apartment complex when the Town of Winchester stepped in, acquired the property and hired Dodson & Flinker and a team of consultants to develop an alternative strategy for the historic site. This winter the town re-engaged Dodson & Flinker to futher analyze development scenarios relative to the potential visual and environmental impacts on this sensitive site.

The Bechtel Environmental Classroom is an ecological learning center for a range of disciplines at Smith College. The proposed 2,300 square foot classroom building is being planned and designed under the rules of the Living Building Challenge, a green building standard more stringent than LEED.
Dodson & Flinker is pleased to welcome Rachel Loeffler to our team as Senior Associate. Rachel joins us with over twelve years of design experience. Trained as both an architect and a landscape architect, she is well-versed at leading and contributing to a range of multi-disciplinary projects inclusive of large scale parks, brownfield remediation, waterfronts, campuses, green infrastructure, courtyards, and healing environments.
Dodson & Flinker has won a merit award in the Landscape Analysis and Planning category from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects for the project and report A Vision for Exeter. Peter Flinker will receive the award at the 2012 BSLA Gala in Boston on April 26th.
