Conservation Development

Creating new development that enables the preservation of extensive tracts of conservation land has been central to the work of Dodson & Flinker for decades. The firm was instrumental in promoting what was a revolutionary concept in the 1980s with nationally prominent publications such as Dealing with Change in the Connecticut: A Design Manual for Conservation and Development and Rural by Design. The firm applied these conservation and development concepts on a wide range of successful planning and built projects ranging from property masterplans, limited development projects and open space development plans for private developers as well as non-profit conservation groups. Typical ratios of conserved land to developed land typically exceed ratios of eight or nine to one making conservation a powerful tool both in the protection of open space as well as in the creation of dynamic, livable and walkable communities.
