Outer Commons is the initial 13-unit phase of a 35 unit housing project planned and designed by Dodson & Flinker in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts. Two duplexes designed to look like large single family houses provide 4 units of affordable housing. The project features 30% affordable housing and the use of cluster housing to create a traditional neighborhood oriented around a central common open space. The design of the houses is based on Sears kit homes of the 1920’s, many of which are found on adjacent neighborhood streets. This project received an overwhelmingly positive response from local boards, neighbors, and affordable housing advocacy groups.
