MASSACHUSETTS LANDSCAPE INVENTORY

The first state-wide survey of scenic and historic landscapes was completed by Harry Dodson and Bob Yaro at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management in 1982. The inventory identified scenic districts throughout the state based on a scenic assessment methodology derived from European and American models. Cultural landscapes including historic landscapes and sites, farmland, historic roads and landmarks played a key role in determining scenic character. The inventory has been effective in guiding state and private conservation efforts, stopping or modifying potentially damaging development proposals and in promoting the appreciation and conservation of scenic and cultural landscape resources. Farmland played a key role in shaping scenic quality in many areas of the state and was recognized as a major scenic factor in the inventory method.
