Dodson & Flinker completed the site design for a contemplative garden adjacent to a historic stone Episcopal Church in the scenic New England village, Sheffield. The garden includes a grove of birch trees, a recessed stone sitting wall, pathways, a columbarium, a fountain and a lawn providing views over the Housatonic River marshes. Native stone for the retaining walls was cut from the same quarry that supplied stone for the church in the 1920’s. The design of the garden was the result of extensive collaboration with the church building committee. The retaining wall serves both as a seating wall and as a columbarium for the burial of ashes. The garden is used for contemplation, prayer, outdoor services, weddings and informal gatherings.
