Dodson & Flinker worked with Margo Jones Architects and the Town of South Hadley to construct a new nature playground and school landscape in South Hadley. The design team sited the new building to protect existing edge of woods and natural terrain while maximizing solar gain. Naturalized site features process stormwater and serve as an educational element through the use of rain gardens, bioswales, a cistern, and a runnel. A sinuous landform divides more active uses from passive uses and provides a framework for many diverse play experiences. The playground is fully accessible and addresses a full range of types of play from embankment slides, forts, sandboxes, sensory gardens, labyrinth, swings, covered play, tricycle loop, raised planting beds, an outdoor classroom, stage, seating areas, climbing logs, and net structures.
