IRWIN M. JACOBS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students at New Bedford’s Irwin M. Jacobs Elementary School welcomed the new school year with a new playground, after the new space designed by Dodson & Flinker opened to students in early September 2018.  The project was completed in collaboration with Turowski2 Architecture of Marion, MA, who designed the 74,025 square foot building to house 430 students in grades Pre-K through 5. The school, which looks out over New Bedford’s East Beach to Buzzards Bay, is ideally situated to connect students with local coastal ecology and their city’s centuries-old maritime history.  Dodson & Flinker’s design includes an ocean-themed adventure playground, an outdoor classroom, interactive stormwater management features, and a rooftop garden to enhance students’ understanding of their local environment and bring learning outside the building’s walls.
