Site plan, construction documents, bidding and construction observation for an historic garden landscape surrounding a renovated hunting lodge in rural western Massachusetts. Historic components of the landscape, including 150 year-old sugar maples, stone walls, meadows and fields were preserved and restored. Extensive new plantings were installed that blended with the history and ecology of the site. Views to surrounding fields and woodlands were enhanced while screening vegetation was planted to provide privacy from a nearby road and residence. New stone walls, pathways, gates and terraces were built to create transitions from the house to the outlying rural landscape. A new vegetable garden, a children’s garden and a fruit tree orchard were included in the plan. Driveways and parking areas were realigned and resurfaced to create clearer circulation and to eliminate excess paving. New plantings included flowering native trees, shade trees, a grove of paper birch. Specimen White Oaks and disease resistant American Elms and American Chestnuts were planted to create landscape focal points.
