Old Harbor Masterplan
Block Island, Rhode Island
The waterfront area surrounding the Block Island ferry terminal suffered from traffic congestion, lack of pedestrian amenities, unsightly parking lots, and underutilized vacant areas. Dodson & Flinker worked with local officials, landowners, businesses and concerned citizens to develop a vision for the waterfront that reduced conflicts between cars and pedestrians, enhanced pedestrian amenities and safety, preserved the town's historic character, enhanced open space and proposed new, carefully designed infill development for appropriate vacant sites. The major focus of the plan was to improve the functioning of the waterfront while enhancing the town's unique historic character. Thanks to an extensive public participation process involving interactive design workshops, the plan has received strong local backing leading to the implementation of a number of key components.
